Fumes From Rotting Algae Kill Horse In France
Sep 28 Mounds of putrefied green algae are building up on France's Brittany coast, releasing poisonous fumes that are believed to have caused the recent death of a horse and the collapse of its rider, reports Agence-France Presse.

Veterinarian Vincent Petit lost consciousness and his horse collapsed when he slipped on a patch of rotting algae near the beach of Saint-Michel-en-Greve on July 28. The horse died almost instantly and Petit was pulled to safety by workers who happened to be nearby.

Intensive farming, which produces nitrates that feed the seaweed's toxicity, is being blamed for the proliferation of algae by environmental groups. Authorities, unable to get rid of the decomposing seaweed that has washed up on shores in more than 80 communities across the northern province, have declared part of the coastline off-limits.
